Be Kind 5K – Real or Virtual – Run and Walk

Family, friends and co-workers of Rosemary Billquist will run, walk and celebrate in memory of “Rosie” on June 20, 2020 to create a lasting memory of her work at UPMC Chautauqua.  Rosie lost her life to a tragic hunting accident over two years ago. Jamie Billquist, her husband, created a fund to assist those working at the hospital with a scholarship for continuing their education.  Participants are signing-up and soliciting sponsors for their support of the Be Kind event.  It is everyone’s hope that the CODVID-19 virus will have dissipated by then and we will once again celebrate the goodness and kindness of our’s and Rosie’s life together that day.

The name of the race comes from the quote Rosie painted on a bench she created for patients to use outside UPMC Chautauqua where she worked.  It reads “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”  It is used daily by visitors and employees many of whom knew Rosie as a joyful, kind-hearted individual who loved to run, take care of their dogs and to help others.

If you would like to participate and sign-up for the race, please visit or call Megan to register, 716-664-8423.  The race starts and ends at Falconer Fire Hall at 115 Davis St. in Falconer. Pre-Registration is from 5-6 p.m. Friday and 7 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the timed 5K run beginning at 9 a.m.  Walkers follow at 9:15 a.m. Medals will be given out to the top 3 in each age category. Rosie was very big advocate and volunteered with local dog therapy organizations, so we invite you to bring your best friend and companion that day!

The pre-registration fee of $25, includes participation in the race, a t-shirt and bag commemorating the event.  Pets may be registered for $5.  Owners must identify name of dog, its breed, licensed by their municipality, pet’s Veterinarian, and proof and date of their pet’s rabies vaccination.  Online registration concludes on June 8 at 11:59 p.m.

Individuals or corporations wishing to become sponsors for the race may do so by contacting Megan Barone in the Development Department at 716.664.8423 or at

Proceeds from the race will support the endowed scholarship for UPMC Chautauqua employees through WCA Foundation.   The Rosemary Billquist Scholarship Fund assists employees of the hospital who are furthering their education in medical records or transcription training, or continuing education in those fields.  To directly support the memorial fund for Rosie, send tax-exempt contributions to the Rosemary Billquist Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o WCA Foundation, P.O. Box 840; Jamestown, NY 14702-0840.
